Announcement of guest seminar by

Dr. Minna Pirhonen, Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Helsinki (Finland)

Title: "Soft rot bacteria - from taxonomy to control"

Summary: The soft rot pathogens Pectobacterium and Dickeya spp. cause disease on a number of crops and ornamentals worldwide, including blackleg diseases of potatoes in the field and soft rots of tubers in storage. It is particularly important to reduce or prevent the incidences of such diseases.

The lecture’s goals are: (1) how to improved pathogen detection tools for Pectobacterium and the closely related soft rot causing pathogens, (2) what information is required to develop resistant or tolerant potato varieties, and (3) what epidemiological information is important to aid growers in disease management decisions.

The lecture will concentrate on the following aspects of soft-rot (on potatoes and other vegetables):

  1. Disease
  2. Taxonomy
  3. Control
  4. What is needed for successful diagnostics with PCR
  5. Plant response during conditions exposing the potato tubers to rotting
